With the tremendous increase in the use of modern communication devices, voice and data cabling requirements have merged. Cabling solutions are now designed to support voice, data, and other services such as video conferencing and security devices. The choice of cable is dependent on the overall requirements of the customer.

GBT can advise customers on the most suitable cable to use and has the expertise to install and test the cable as an integral part of their communications system. This includes the provision of wall outlets, patch panels and rack mount cabinets

Most customers will require a communication system that supports both analogue and digital voice and also has the facility to provide data transmission. For this, structured copper cabling will be the chosen media for the forseeable future due to low cost and ease of installation.

• CAT 5 cable is widely used. It meets all the standard performance tests and is rated at 100Mhz


• CAT 5 Enhanced (CAT5E) cable is rated up to 200Mhz but has more stringent performance requirements.


• CAT6 cable is rated up to 300Mhz and supports the transmission of data at very high speeds.

As bandwidths increase, fibre optic cable is becoming more common as an alternative to copper cabling. This is particularly so for use in the backbone and horizontal sections of the cabling infrastructure of a system
